THE ISLAND ENVIRONMENT
Situated in the broad and striking lagoon environment, the island also contains various features of great natural interest.
Walking round the old military patrol route that winds around the island for nearly 1 km, you can enjoy 360º views of Venice. The path winds through areas in which a wide variety of vegetation can be found. Bay, ash, hawthorne, wild thorn, Palestrina reed thicket can all be found in abundance. On the north side of the island, bounded by a small canal named “ghebo” (in which fishes and crustaceans can be observed), a large variety of “barena” plants such as limonium, glasswort and mugweed can be found.
Inside the boundary wall mulberry trees line an old Austrian path that spans the radius of the island, ash trees and poplars can be seen around the well-curbs, and fruit trees growing wild along the wall.
Lazzaretto Nuovo and its surroundings are also visited by a rich variety of bird life including seagulls, egrets, grey herons, cormorants, kingfishers, duck-hawks and night-birds of prey. In the summertime it’s also possible to see a stilt-bird nest.
